Helping Survivors Heal and Preventing Future Abuse
According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that 1 billion children experience physical, sexual, or emotional violence or neglect per year.
While the issue is widespread, people often hesitate to talk about child abuse and neglect due to the stigma the topic carries. But when we stay silent, we cause harm to survivors and fail to prevent future instances of abuse.
To raise awareness on a global scale, the United Nations declared November 18 as the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence. This day of acknowledgement coincides with the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse (November 19), which was enacted by the Women’s World Summit Foundation.
Both days share the common goal of mobilizing individuals, communities, and governments to take action to protect children and provide support to survivors.
